What is an Eyelid Ectropion?

Updated: Dec 7, 2019

Eyelid ectropion is a condition in which the eyelid turns outward (top, arrow). It is typically caused by laxity of the eyelid and weakening of the surrounding eyelid muscles (known as the eyelid retractors). It may also be caused by scarring of the eyelid skin from previous surgery or trauma. Patients with eyelid ectropion often experience symptoms of dry eyes or even excessive tearing.

This pleasant lady underwent surgical correction of her lower eyelid ectropion and experienced relief of her symptoms. Shown here (bottom) are her results one week after surgery.
