Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP)
IN SAN DIEGO

What is Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP)?

PRP harnesses your body’s own growth factors to support skin repair, collagen production, and tissue rejuvenation — especially helpful for delicate under-eye skin. Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) is a concentrated portion of your blood containing platelets, growth factors, and signaling molecules; after a quick blood draw, we process your sample in a sterile system to isolate PRP, then apply it topically (often paired with microneedling) or inject it precisely where support is needed to improve texture, tone, and overall skin quality. Below, we answer the most common questions about PRP at Oculofacial Surgical Arts.

What Concerns Can PRP Improve?

PRP can help with:

  • Fine lines and crepey skin (including lower eyelids)

  • Early laxity and loss of firmness

  • Mild dark-circle appearance related to thin skin/texture

  • Post-procedure healing support and glow

  • Texture irregularities and enlarged pores

  • Early acne-scar refinement (as part of a series)

Note: PRP improves skin quality; it doesn’t replace volume restoration or the skin tightening of surgery/ablative lasers. We’ll guide you on the best combo for your goals.

Can PRP Be Combined with Other Treatments?

Yes. PRP is a powerful adjunct that can amplify results:

  • Microneedling + PRP: PRP is applied topically or injected after microneedling to bathe micro-channels in growth factors, supporting collagen remodeling and faster recovery.

  • Blepharoplasty (Eyelid Surgery)Staged before or after surgery (once cleared) to enhance skin quality, soften crepe lines, and complement surgical tightening.

  • CO₂ Laser Resurfacing (staged): Can be used in separate sessions to support healing and maintain collagen gains between more intensive laser treatments.

  • BBL/IPL & Skincare: Alternated or sequenced to address tone and pigmentation while PRP focuses on quality and resilience of the skin.

  • Neuromodulators (e.g., Botox®): PRP improves the canvas; neuromodulators relax lines and fillers restore volume. Timing is personalized to your plan.

Your treatment roadmap, whether non-surgical, surgical, or a combination, is personalized to your skin, anatomy, recovery window, and desired outcome.

Is PRP Painful?

Topical numbing is used for patient comfort. Injections feel like brief pinches/pressure. Post-treatment, expect mild warmth or tenderness for a day or two.

Which Areas can be Treated with PRP?

  • Under-eyes and eyelids (peri-orbital skin)

  • Full face, neck, and chest

  • Scalp (for hair-health protocols)

  • Hands and other small focus areas

What Is Recovery Like?

Downtime is typically minimal:

  • Day 0–1: Pinkness, mild swelling; pinpoint marks if injected

  • Days 2–3: Possible light dryness/flaking

  • Days 3–7: Gradual glow and smoother feel

Avoid makeup for 24 hours, strenuous exercise the first day, and direct sun while healing. Follow our aftercare for gentle cleansing, hydration, and broad-spectrum SPF.

Are There Risks or Side Effects Associated with PRP?

Because PRP is autologous (from your own blood), reactions are rare. Temporary redness, swelling, bruising, or tenderness can occur. Transient pigment shifts are uncommon but possible without strict sun protection. We review your medical history to minimize risk.

How Many Treatments Will I Need, How Soon Will I See Results, and How Long Do They Last?

Most patients start with 3 sessions spaced 4–6 weeks apart, followed by maintenance 1–2 times per year. Plans vary based on concern severity and timeline.

Early radiance can appear within 1–2 weeks, with collagen-related changes building gradually over 6–12 weeks after a series. With consistent skincare and sun protection, improvements in skin quality are long-lasting and can be sustained with periodic treatments.

Who is NOT a Candidate for PRP?

We may delay or avoid PRP if you have:

  • Active infection or inflammatory skin disease in the area

  • Blood/platelet disorders or current anticoagulation that’s not medically adjustable

  • Significant anemia or very low platelet counts

  • Pregnancy/breastfeeding (case-by-case for add-on topicals)

We’ll advise the safest approach for your situation.
