What is Microneedling?

Microneedling is a precision skin-renewal treatment that uses a medical-grade device with ultra-fine, single-use needles to create controlled micro-channels at a precise depth. These micro-injuries jump-start your body’s natural healing response — stimulating fresh collagen and elastin — so fine lines soften, texture refines, and tone becomes more even with minimal downtime. As the skin remodels and replenishes collagen over time, it appears smoother, firmer, and more radiant. Below, we answer the most common questions about microneedling at Oculofacial Surgical Arts.

What Skin Concerns Can Microneedling Improve?

Microneedling can help improve:

  • Fine lines and early wrinkles

  • Crepey skin (including the lower eyelids)

  • Enlarged pores and uneven texture

  • Mild acne scarring and superficial scars

  • Mild pigment irregularities and overall dullness

  • Early laxity and loss of firmness

Can Microneedling Be Combined with Other Treatments?

Yes. Microneedling integrates well with complementary therapies to amplify results while keeping downtime efficient:

  • PRP (Platelet-Rich Plasma): Applied topically or injected after microneedling, PRP delivers concentrated growth factors that support collagen remodeling, speed recovery, and enhance glow—especially helpful for delicate areas like the lower eyelids.

  • Blepharoplasty (Eyelid Surgery): While microneedling is a non-surgical collagen stimulator, blepharoplasty removes excess skin/fat and restores eyelid anatomy. We often stage microneedling before or after surgery (once cleared) to refine texture, soften fine lines, and complement surgical tightening for a more polished result.

  • COâ‚‚ Laser Resurfacing (staged): For deeper lines or etched-in wrinkles, COâ‚‚ provides a stronger resurfacing effect. Microneedling can be used in a separate session to maintain collagen gains between laser treatments or to treat areas requiring a gentler approach.

  • RF Microneedling (if appropriate): Adds controlled heat to target laxity and creping. Not everyone needs radiofrequency (RF); we’ll advise based on skin type, anatomic area (especially around the eyes), and goals.

  • Neuromodulators: Botox® can relax wrinkle-forming muscles so microneedling’s texture benefits show more clearly. Sequencing is tailored to your plan.

  • Broadband Light (BBL/IPL): Can be alternated or staged in a series to improve tone and pigment while microneedling focuses on texture and collagen.

  • Medical-grade Skincare & Exosome/Peptide Serums: Support healing, barrier repair, and collagen synthesis post-treatment for longer-lasting results.

Your treatment roadmap, whether non-surgical, surgical, or a combination, is personalized to your skin, anatomy, recovery window, and desired outcome.

Is Microneedling Painful?

Most patients describe a tolerable, scratchy sensation. We apply a topical anesthetic before treatment for comfort. Post-treatment, you may feel sunburn-like warmth for several hours.

What Is Recovery Like?

Downtime is typically mild:

  • Day 0–1: Pink to red skin, warmth/tightness

  • Days 2–3: Possible dryness or light flaking

  • Days 3–5: Glow begins to emerge

Avoid makeup for 24 hours, vigorous exercise the first day, and direct sun while healing. Use gentle cleanser, hydrating barrier support, and broad-spectrum SPF as directed.

Are There Risks or Side Effects Associated with Microneedling?

While COâ‚‚ laser resurfacing is considered a safe procedure, there are potential risks and side effects. These can include temporary redness, swelling, itching, scarring, changes in skin pigmentation, and increased sensitivity to sunlight. However, these side effects are usually temporary and can be minimized by following proper aftercare instructions.

How Many Treatments Will I Need & How Long Do Results Last?

A series of 3–4 sessions spaced about 4–6 weeks apart is common for foundational collagen building. Maintenance sessions 1–2 times per year help preserve results. Your exact plan is customized to your skin, goals, and timeline.

Collagen remodeling builds gradually over 6–12 weeks after a series and continues to refine for months. With a quality skincare routine and sun protection, improvements in texture, firmness, and radiance are long-lasting and can be maintained with periodic treatments.

Who is NOT a Candidate for Microneedling?

Microneedling may be delayed or avoided if you have:

  • Active acne or infection in the treatment area

  • Open wounds, dermatitis, or uncontrolled rosacea flares

  • Tendency to form keloids or hypertrophic scars

  • Recent isotretinoin use (you’ll be advised on safe timing)

  • Pregnancy/breastfeeding (for most add-on topicals; we will advise case-by-case)

Why Choose Oculofacial Surgical Arts for Periorbital & Facial Microneedling?

Our surgeon-led team specializes in the delicate eyelid and periocular region, where precision matters most. We use medical-grade, single-use needle cartridges and evidence-based protocols tailored to your skin, anatomy, and goals — especially around the lower eyelids. Treatments are sequenced thoughtfully with complementary options (e.g., PRP, COâ‚‚ laser, neuromodulators, and — when appropriate — blepharoplasty) to deliver natural, believable results with minimal downtime. From consultation through aftercare, you’ll receive transparent guidance, meticulous technique, and a personalized plan that prioritizes safety and long-term skin health.

Microneedling vs. COâ‚‚ Laser Resurfacing

Microneedling is ideal for patients seeking collagen stimulation with minimal downtime and broad skin-type versatility.

COâ‚‚ laser resurfacing addresses deeper wrinkles and more advanced photoaging with more robust results — and more downtime — and is best reserved for appropriately selected skin types.

During consultation, we’ll recommend the approach (or combination) that best suits your skin, goals, and lifestyle.
